starting out

so yesterday, my father and i made the final leg to mississippi…thank goodness he was the driver :) THANKS DAD! the closer i got the more excited i became. i couldn’t wait to get there and get started.

i had been told that the group of people who were there for this week were a bunch of college kids from georgia. this made me even more excited because they were my age AND they were from georgia. i knew i would get along well with them.

before we arrived at the church, i had to make a pitstop at walmart to get the final things i would need. this is where i got my new navigational system for my car. i really needed one considering i would be in a very unfamiliar area for the month. i am in LOVE, for real. it is awesome and i don’t know why i never wanted one before. it is going to be a lifesaver…I can honestly say I will never get lost again…which is rather comforting.

so we got to the church and met with the pastor, pastor don, and another missionary, named jamie who has been there for 5 years now. they were both super nice. i was then shown to my living quarters, which is basically a train car…and only about 8 ft by 8 ft inside. it contained a bunk bed and a sink…that’s it.  we unloaded my stuff and then i set about the property to show my dad around.  i also showed him the wonderful beach a mile down the road, which i suspect i will making a trip down to at least once a day :)

it was finally time to take my dad to the airport and say goodbye. it didn’t hit me until my drive back to the church that i was now all alone in a state i barely knew. the surprising part was that i didn’t feel lonely or sad, but rather very independent and pleased with myself. two emotions that i rarely feel about myself. it felt really good. you see, i struggle with being independent and outgoing. meeting new people can be a bit of a struggle for me. but i felt very confident and i believe God definitely played a part in that.

it was wednesday night, so they had a church service at the church. the pastor spoke about prayer and its importance in our lives as christians. it was very good and something that i definitely needed to hear because i know dont pray as much as i should.

after the service i was able to visit and get to know the missionary there, jamie, whom i will be working with everyday. i also met and got to kno some of the college kids who were there. they were so friendly. i found out that all of them got involved in this trip thru BCM and that they all go to different colleges and most of them didnt kno each other before they came. the sad thing is that they will all be leaving tmrw, but there will be new groups coming for next week!

today was kinda a slow day...i mostly just got acquainted with the church property and what i would be doing while im here. there are only 12 people here right now so there is not much to do, but next week there is supposed to be 110-120 people staying all week...so it is going to be a very busy and crazy week.

also, today, i was able to meet up with a girl named daniela, who is also a permanent missionary at lakeshore. i had met her when i came over spring break and we kinda kept in touch over facebook. she is awesome and im looking forward to working with her in the next month :) it looks like im going to be working with a really great group of people :)

after lunch, the pastor talked to the college group about the effects of katrina on the community, which i will tell more about in my next blog entry.

later that afternoon the pastor took myself, jamie, and daniela out to get a sno-balls. everyone was really excited about that but i had no idea what they were. apparently they are really popular around mississippi...they sounded like sno-cones, but they were a little different. these icy treats come in EVERY flavor imaginable and can be topped with cream or with ice cream. the ice was much smoother than any shaved ice ive ever had. i decided to get one with cake batter and a topping of cream (which was like sweet milk). it was sooo yummy. it was probably one of the sweetest things ive ever eaten, but boy was it good. the cream on top made it taste even better. i will definitely be making more trips to that place :)

well...thats all for now. until next time :)
